CULINARY DELIGHTS FOR THE
GROWING MIND |
Combine 2000 primary to high school
children with a throng of corporate sponsors and professional exhibitions
and a huge multi-purpose field and it makes for a grand event. This was
the nature of Culinary & Scientific Competition put on by Betknobs
Holdings Limited at the Kaiser Sports Complex on Wednesday, January 31,
2007. The event was held in conjunction with the HEART-NTA and The Ministry
of Education in an attempt to generate a sense of awareness in young people
by exposing them to career possibilities that exists in today's Jamaica.

Hedonism III signed on as
a sponsor of the event at the behest of the organizer Mr. Rupert Anderson.
Executive Chef Mark Cole along with his team of culinary wizards made the
trip to Kiser Sports Club in Discovery Bay. Not even the treat of rain
could dampen the spirits of the children as they bounced from booth to
booth watching intently as the exhibitors showcased their products and
gave demonstrations. Hedonism III's booth became the epicenter of the event
as close to 300 children gathered around the red and black décor
of the tent to marvel at Chef Cole's cooking. Pastry chef Anthony Walters’
Shango (Banana and cheese cake wrapped in a spring roll and deep fried
and dipped in a vanilla sauce) was a big hit with the children and the
teachers accompanying them. |
|
Garde Manger Dwight Cross,
carved his way into the pumpkins and melons to the amazement of the children
who by now had gotten their fill of Shango and were listening attentively
to Dwight's directions on how to carve the different patterns into vegetables
and fruits. The final act of the day saw Chef Cole preparing a feast for
the eyes and mouth. First was succulent roasted pork tenderloin marinated
over night and reduced in orange juice. This was followed by Coconut shrimp
dipped in a tomato sauce and the final act of the day was a chicken breast
sauté.
The children left the booth
with more than just the taste of Shango in their mouths; they left with
the sense that a career in the culinary arts can be rewarding and achievable
for them. Hedonism III is proud to have played our part in this exercise
in youth development. |
